South Korea Approved to Import Russian Oil After US Eases Sanctions to Control Energy Price Crisis

South Korea has been authorized by the United States to import Russian energy under new conditions requiring payment in currencies other than the US dollar amid the global oil price crisis.

South Korea confirmed it has received permission from the United States to import some energy from Russia under a policy easing sanctions. Yang Ki-uk, an official from South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, revealed that previously the US announced a temporary easing of sanctions on Russian crude oil and petroleum products.

However, the Seoul government held further discussions with Washington to clarify details due to remaining uncertainties and concerns about these measures.

The outcome of the talks stated that South Korea can purchase oil and energy from Russia under the important condition that payments must be made in currencies other than the US dollar, and that secondary sanctions will not be applied.

This move comes as the administration of Donald Trump is attempting to use all measures to control oil prices in the global market amid ongoing conflict, having recently eased sanctions on hundreds of millions of barrels of Russian oil.
