The Israeli military claims it has killed one of the commanders of the Iranian navy who played a key role in laying mines and closing the Strait of Hormuz.
On 26 March 2026, the Israeli military announced it had killed Ali Reza Tangsiri, a commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) navy, describing him as a key figure involved in laying mines and blockading the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global crude oil transport.
Iranian authorities have not yet commented on the reports of Tangsiri's death.
“Last night, in a precise and forceful operation, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) eliminated the IRGC navy commander Tangsiri along with other senior naval officials,” said Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz on Thursday.
“The Israeli military has eliminated the IRGC navy commander directly responsible for terrorist operations involving mine-laying and obstructing navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,” Katz emphasized. “We will continue to operate in Iran with full force to achieve the objectives of the war.”
Katz also described the operation as “an important message to our American allies, reflecting Israel’s assistance in reopening the Strait of Hormuz.”
Tangsiri had become increasingly prominent since Israel and the United States began military operations against Iran on 28 February. He was regarded as a key orchestrator behind the near-total blockade of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
He was active on social media throughout the conflict, posting most recently on platform X last Tuesday, stating that all ship passages through the strait must be fully coordinated with Iranian maritime authorities. He frequently shared updates on IRGC navy operations in the Persian Gulf.
