Germany Advances Measures to Control Fuel Prices Amid War-Driven Cost Surge

The German parliament is advancing a bill to control rising fuel prices caused by the Iran war, including measures that allow gas stations to adjust prices only once per day.

On 26 Mar 2026 GMT+7, the German Bundestag passed an initial bill within a fuel policy package aimed at curbing soaring prices resulting from the war in Iran, including regulations that limit gas stations to increasing prices only once daily.

This new policy was proposed by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the ruling parties, and was approved by the lower house last Thursday.

If approved by the German parliament, the measure will apply to all types of gasoline and diesel. The parliamentary statement said gas stations will be allowed to raise prices only once per day at noon.

The new regulation follows Austria's model, which limits gas stations to one price increase per day at 12:00 noon, a measure Austria has used since 2011.

This month, Austria further tightened the controls in response to the conflict in Iran, now allowing gas stations to raise prices at noon only three times per week: on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Meanwhile, several European countries have announced national relief measures to ease the impact of rising fuel prices on consumers. Last week, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez approved an energy package worth 5 billion euros to offset costs caused by oil supply disruptions.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated that his country will provide subsidies for fuel and fertilizer, as well as discounts on ferry tickets.
