Donald Trump has revealed that the "gift" from Iran he referred to a few days ago is the permission for 10 oil tankers to pass through the Hormuz Strait. He pointed out that Iran is trying to show sincerity in the negotiations.
On 26 Mar 2026 GMT+7, U.S. President Donald Trump disclosed that the mysterious "gift" he mentioned to reporters earlier in the week, which Iran gave to the U.S. as part of negotiations, was allowing 10 oil tankers to successfully transit the Hormuz Strait, a key global oil shipping route.
Earlier that same week, Trump indicated that this goodwill gesture contributed to diplomatic efforts to end the war, although at that time he withheld details about what exactly the "gift" was.
"It is a very big gift, of enormous value, and I won’t tell you what it is, but it is a very important prize," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Tuesday.
Most recently, on Thursday, Trump said the U.S. has been engaged in "very important discussions" with unnamed Iranian officials, and the ability of the oil tankers to move through the strait serves as proof that the negotiators are serious.
"They said, ‘To prove to you that we are sincere, stable, and ready to negotiate, we will allow 8 tankers to pass through — eight big ships,’" Trump said, adding, "They followed through on their word." These ships passed through the Hormuz Strait under the Pakistani flag.
Trump added that Iran sent two more ships "to apologize for something they had said before," an act that helped convince the U.S. that "we are negotiating with the right people."
Additionally, when asked if he thought Iran should have the right to charge tolls for ships passing through the strait, Trump responded, "They shouldn’t be able to, but right now they are doing it a little bit secretly."
