25-Year-Old Spanish Woman Fights 20 Months for Right to Euthanasia, Moves the Nation

A Spanish court has ruled to allow 25-year-old Noelia Castillo to end her life through euthanasia after a 20-month legal fight, amid family drama and nationwide controversy.

Noelia Castillo, a 25-year-old Spanish woman who became a national topic of debate, has passed away after being granted permission for euthanasia, concluding a legal battle that lasted more than 20 months.

Her case began after she filed a petition in 2024 to exercise her "right to die with dignity," but faced opposition from her father, who appealed on grounds that she had mental health issues and that the state should protect her life. This prolonged the matter through the courts until the European Court of Human Rights ruled she had the right to choose to end her own life.

A few days before her death, Noelia told Antena 3 in an interview that her decision was not sudden but a result of long-accumulated pain.

She shared that her life began to unravel after her parents separated when she was 13, leading her to live in a care center. She was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder and borderline personality disorder, while also enduring multiple sexual abuses—by a former partner and incidents in entertainment venues—that she never reported to authorities.

The physical and emotional pain led to a suicide attempt in 2022. Although she survived, she became paralyzed from the waist down and wheelchair-bound for life.

In the interview, she said, "I want to leave peacefully and end the pain," a statement that deeply moved many people.

Her case ignited intense debate in Spanish society between those supporting patients' rights to self-determination and those believing the state should protect life, especially among vulnerable groups. Ultimately, Noelia departed as she intended, amid differing family opinions.
