Thai Cargo Ship Mayurinarie Runs Aground near Qeshm Island in Iranian Waters

The Thai cargo ship "Mayurinarie" ran aground near Qeshm Island in Iran after being attacked by an explosive device that caused a fire in the engine room two weeks ago. There has been no update on the status or rescue efforts for the three missing Thai crew members.

Iran's Tasnim News Agency reported that the "Mayurinarie," registered in Thailand and operated by Precious Shipping Company, is currently aground off the coast of Qeshm Island, Iran, following an attack by an unidentified explosive device about two weeks ago.

The incident took place in the Strait of Hormuz, approximately 11 nautical miles from Oman's northern coast, a critical global shipping route. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) stated that "Mayurinarie" reported being struck by an object near the stern, causing an explosion and severe fire in the engine room. The crew immediately sent a distress signal and abandoned ship.

Initially, the Omani navy rescued 20 crew members. However, three crew members remain missing, and officials continue intensive search efforts.

On 24 March, Mr. Sihasak Puangketkaew, Thailand's Foreign Minister, disclosed updates on the rescue of the three missing Thai crew members, stating that Iranian and Omani authorities have jointly accessed the "Mayurinarie" to assess damage and continue searching for those missing.

The maritime news website Splash 247 published photographs of the Bangkok-registered "Mayurinarie" showing damage from the explosion and smoke. Although the fire was later controlled, the damage left the ship uncontrollable, ultimately causing it to run aground.
