Cambodia Temporarily Suspends Traffic Fines to Ease Burden Amid Soaring Fuel Prices

The Cambodian government announced a temporary suspension of traffic violation fines to alleviate the economic hardship faced by citizens after fuel prices surged to record highs due to the impact of the Middle East war.

Touch Sokha, spokesperson for Cambodia's Ministry of Interior, announced special relief measures, stating that the government ordered a temporary halt on traffic fines to avoid further burdening drivers already struggling with sharply rising fuel costs.

Although fines are suspended, traffic police will continue their duties as usual, focusing on educating the public about traffic laws and managing traffic during peak hours. Authorities also confirmed that "alcohol level testing" and inspections for weapons or explosives during nighttime patrols will continue rigorously to ensure public safety.

Cambodia's Ministry of Commerce released the latest energy price data, showing continuous increases: gasoline (RON 92) is priced at 5,450 riel (approximately 44.67 baht) per liter, up 41.5% since the conflict began. Diesel prices have soared to 7,100 riel (about 58.20 baht) per liter, an 84% increase. LPG gas prices have also risen by 60%.

The conflict in Iran has disrupted about one-fifth of the world's crude oil and gas supply, with the Asian region among the hardest hit.

Since Cambodia depends 100% on imported fuel, the government last week began reducing import tariffs and other taxes related to petroleum products to try to soften the shock from global energy price fluctuations, followed by the recent temporary suspension of traffic fines.
