US Considers Deploying Up to 10,000 Additional Troops to the Middle East

Major media outlets report that the US is preparing to consider sending up to 10,000 additional troops to the Middle East to expand military options for Donald Trump amid escalating tensions following Israel's renewed airstrikes in central Tehran.

Several US media outlets report that the US government is considering sending up to 10,000 additional troops to the Middle East amid rising speculation that the US may be preparing for a ground operation in Iran, even as President Donald Trump insists that peace talks with the Tehran government are progressing well.

The Wall Street Journal reports that this troop movement plan aims to provide "military options" for Trump after the Middle East has been engulfed in conflict since the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran on 28 February. These new forces would join thousands of paratroopers and marines previously deployed in the region.

Although exact locations have not been specified, most of the troops are expected to be stationed within striking distance of Iran and Qeshm Island, a key Iranian oil export hub, enabling rapid military action.

Iranian officials have declared firmly that if the US decides to send troops for a ground invasion, Iran will retaliate by ordering the Houthi rebels in Yemen to attack commercial shipping in the Red Sea, opening a new front that could severely impact the global economy and politics.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military announced early this morning (27 March) that it had carried out a major airstrike targeting the "infrastructure of the Iranian terrorist regime" in central Tehran, further intensifying the conflict.

President Trump has attempted to delay deadlines for striking Iranian energy facilities, assuring that peace negotiations are "going very well," and repeatedly stating there are no plans to deploy ground troops for direct combat. However, the leaked plan to bolster forces by tens of thousands contradicts these peace claims and raises concerns that the war could escalate uncontrollably.
