Heavy rains have caused landslides in several East African countries. In Tanzania, multiple homes were destroyed and at least 20 people, including young children, have died. Urgent evacuation warnings are in effect as many countries in the region face severe crises due to the situation.
On 27 Mar 2026, heavy rains triggered landslides in southern Tanzania, resulting in at least 20 deaths over recent days amid worsening floods and disasters across East Africa. Officials reported that the incident occurred in the Umbea region on Wednesday morning after heavy rain and strong winds caused landslides that buried several homes in the Rungwe district.
Local authorities revealed that the death toll has risen to 20, including a child just 1.5 years old. The meteorological agency forecasts continued rainfall over the coming days, increasing the risk of further landslides and flooding. The district governor urged residents in vulnerable areas to evacuate temporarily until the situation improves.
The regional meteorological center warned that during this year’s rainy season from March to May, there is a 45% chance that rainfall will exceed average levels across multiple countries, ranging from Uganda to Djibouti.
This crisis coincides with severe situations in several East African countries. In Kenya, floods have claimed at least 88 lives, affecting more than 21 administrative districts. Reports indicate that at least two rivers have overflowed after continuous heavy rain since early March, prompting deployment of military forces to assist rescue efforts. Meanwhile, in southern Ethiopia, landslides earlier in March caused at least 80 deaths.
