The Houthi rebel group in Yemen, supported by Iran, launched missile attacks on Israel for the first time since the war between the US, Israel, and Iran erupted one month ago.
On 28 Mar 2026, the Houthi rebels in Yemen, backed by Iran, announced they had launched cruise missiles at Israel for the first time since the US and Israel began striking Iran on 28 Jul. This marked the Houthis' official declaration of entering the war.
“The Yemeni army, with the help and faith in the Almighty Allah, has carried out its first military operation by launching a swarm of missiles targeting key Israeli military bases in the southern occupied Palestinian territories,” the Houthi statement said, adding this is part of what they call a “direct military intervention” to support Iran.
Earlier, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported detecting missiles launched from Yemen heading toward Israel and were working to intercept them.
The Houthi statement said this operation was a direct response to “the ongoing military escalation, attacks on infrastructure, and crimes including massacres of our brothers in Lebanon, Iran, Iraq, and Palestine.”
Houthi officials had previously told CNN that the group is ready to join the war in support of Iran if the US and Israel escalate their attacks further.
Additionally, Mohammed Mansour, the Houthi Information Minister, told CNN that closing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait near Yemen’s coast—a strategic point connecting the Red Sea to global shipping routes—is “a feasible option.”
