Car Hits Pedestrians Injuring Several in Derby City Police Arrest Suspect

A dramatic incident occurred in central Derby, England, when a car plowed into a group of pedestrians on a side street late Saturday night, resulting in several injuries, some critical. Police quickly apprehended the black car’s driver and closed the area to investigate the evidence.

Derbyshire Police reported that multiple pedestrians were struck by a vehicle on Priory Gate, central Derby, at about 9:30 p.m. local time on Saturday (28 Mar). Several people were injured, with some in serious condition, and were urgently transported to hospital after receiving first aid at the scene.

Authorities swiftly intercepted the suspect vehicle, identified as a black Suzuki Swift, and arrested the driver, a man in his early 30s, for questioning at the police station. Police stated that the incident appeared to be isolated and posed no ongoing risk to the public.

Witnesses at the scene described a panic-stricken atmosphere, with people fleeing nearby bars in shock and tears. Local reporters noted that Priory Gate, usually crowded with students and Saturday night revelers, fell silent and was strewn with debris from the damage.

Catherine Atkinson, Member of Parliament for North Derby, expressed shock over the incident, sending her support to the injured and thanking emergency responders for quickly controlling the situation.

Police have closed Priory Gate from Curzon Street to Ford Street to conduct investigations. Authorities have urged anyone who witnessed the event or has information about the black Suzuki involved to come forward promptly.
