Nestlé disclosed that over 413,000 KitKat chocolate bars were stolen from a truck during transportation in Europe. The incident happened last week on the route from Italy to Poland and is expected to cause product shortages before the Easter festival.
Nestlé, the owner of the famous KitKat chocolate brand, revealed a major theft incident. A truck carrying 413,793 KitKat bars, weighing more than 12 tons, was stolen without a trace while en route from Italy to Poland last week.
A KitKat spokesperson joked, “We always encourage everyone to 'Have a break' with KitKat, but it seems this group of thieves took our message a bit too literally and decided to seize over 12 tons of our chocolate.” However, the company noted this is a significant issue affecting businesses of all sizes, as theft operations are becoming increasingly sophisticated and well-planned.
This incident directly impacts market supply. Nestlé warned that there could be a 'KitKat shortage' in some areas, especially during the upcoming Easter season when chocolate demand surges.
Currently, there are no leads on the truck or the thieves, but Nestlé believes the stolen batch may be distributed through unofficial channels across Europe. The company has implemented a tracking system using "production batch codes"; if these codes are scanned and match the stolen lot, the system will immediately alert the company to aid legal action.
This event aligns with reports from the Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA), which indicate a worrying rise in fraud and product theft across Europe and the Middle East.
