Several US-affiliated universities have decided to switch entirely to online operations after Tehran threatened attacks in response to recent assaults on educational institutions in Iran.
On the morning of Sunday, 29 Mar 2026 GMT+7, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced it would target universities linked to the US and Israel in the Middle East as retaliation for recent attacks on higher education centers in Iran.
Recently, the president of the American University of Beirut in Lebanon stated in a release that due to the IRGC threats, the university will fully switch to remote teaching and working tomorrow and Tuesday “to ensure the highest level of safety.”
Meanwhile, the Lebanese American University in Beirut announced on its website that it will also switch to “full online operations” on Monday and Tuesday, describing this as a “precautionary measure due to widespread threats against educational institutions in the region.”
Many universities in the region had already shifted to online learning since the conflict in Iran erupted more than a month ago.
Qatar's Ministry of Education announced on 28 Feb 2026 GMT+7, the day the war began, that all kindergartens, schools, educational centers, and universities across the country would switch to remote learning until further notice.
Georgetown University in Qatar, Texas A&M University at Qatar, and the College of Arts at the University of Virginia Commonwealth in Qatar have all declared that classes will continue online until further updates.
Additionally, the American University of Kuwait, the American University in Dubai, and the American University of Ras Al Khaimah also moved to online learning from early last month.
