NASA Prepares to Send Humans Back to the Moon for the First Time in 50 Years, Aiming to Launch Artemis II Mission in Early April

The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration is advancing the significant Artemis II mission, preparing to send astronauts to the Moon for the first time in over 50 years.

All four crew members of the Artemis II mission have arrived at the rocket launch site at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, amid final preparations before the actual launch.

The mission is led by Commander Reid Wiseman with a crew of four who traveled from Houston. This marks a major milestone for the Artemis program aiming to return humans to explore the Moon since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972.

However, the rocket launch has faced delays of over two months due to fuel leaks and other technical issues, requiring multiple rocket removals and re-entries into the hangar. NASA now targets an earliest possible launch in early April, with a six-day window at the start of the month before a potential nearly one-month postponement if the launch cannot proceed.

The Artemis II mission will use the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket with the Orion spacecraft to fly the crew around the Moon using a gravity "slingshot" maneuver before returning to Earth. The entire mission will last about 10 days, ending with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.

Although this mission will not enter lunar orbit like Apollo 8 in 1968, it is designed to be safer, similar to Apollo 13's trajectory which flew around the Moon then returned to Earth.

A notable feature of this mission is its reflection of modern societal diversity, with the crew including women, people of various ethnic backgrounds, and an astronaut from Canada, marking a significant step in opening opportunities in the global space sector.

The Artemis II mission represents a key milestone in NASA's long-term plan to return humans to the Moon and pave the way for deep space exploration, including future missions to Mars.
