Kim Jong-un supervised the test of a new solid-fuel missile engine, with thrust increased to 2,500 kilonewtons, advancing a five-year plan to enhance strategic military strength.
On 30 March 2026, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that North Korea's supreme leader Kim Jong-un personally oversaw a ground test of a new high-thrust solid-fuel missile engine developed from carbon fiber composite materials. The new engine delivers a maximum thrust of 2,500 kilonewtons and is likely being developed for use in the intercontinental "Hwasong-20" missile currently under development. The date and location of this test were not disclosed.
At the same time, the North Korean leader inspected tests of a new main battle tank defense system capable of intercepting anti-tank weapons from multiple directions. Reports stated that the tests were 100% successful.
The report noted that these tests are part of a five-year defense development plan aimed at continuously upgrading strategic offensive capabilities. The North Korean leader said the country's military potential is entering a critical transition phase in building strategic forces.
This test marks the first since September last year, when the engine's thrust was about 1,971 kilonewtons, reflecting significant and advanced development progress.
