
A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Indonesia, with one initial fatality reported and tsunami warnings issued in some areas.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) stated the earthquake occurred at 06:48 local time in the Molucca Sea near the center of the Indonesian archipelago, initially measuring 7.8 magnitude before USGS revised it down to 7.4.
The epicenter was located approximately 120 kilometers from the city of Ternate, a small island densely populated with over 205,000 residents.
Local search and rescue teams reported a 70-year-old woman died after being trapped under collapsed building debris; the victim was from Minahasa district in North Sulawesi province.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, based in Hawaii, issued a warning stating there is a "possibility" of giant waves within a 1,000-kilometer radius from the earthquake epicenter along the coastlines of Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia.
