40 Countries Hold Virtual Meeting Committed to Using All Measures to Reopen Strait of Hormuz

More than 40 countries participated in an online meeting to discuss the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, all expressing commitment to using every measure to increase pressure on Iran.

On 2 Apr 2026 GMT+7, over 40 countries took part in a virtual meeting hosted by the United Kingdom to discuss the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz. Officials from all continents worldwide explored possible approaches to intensify pressure on Iran.

"We are deeply committed to employing every feasible measure—diplomatic, economic, and coordinated efforts—to restore the operation of the Strait," said Yvette Cooper, UK Foreign Secretary, speaking to reporters after the meeting.

"Iran's reckless attacks disrupt international maritime trade and attempt to seize control of the global economy, affecting oil prices and mortgage interest rates in the UK, as well as aviation fuel worldwide, fertilizer for Africa, and cooking gas for Asia," she added.

In a UK statement, multiple nations discussed the possibility of increasing international diplomatic pressure, including through the United Nations, preparing joint agreements to support market confidence, and exploring coordinated measures such as sanctions on Iran.

The UK Foreign Secretary also noted that future actions might involve working with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to ensure that stranded ships can be freed and move again.

"We are clear that we need diplomatic pressure, economic pressure, and separately planned military efforts regarding how to maintain long-term maritime security once this conflict ends," Cooper added.

According to the IMO, nearly 2,000 ships remain stranded in the Persian Gulf. The organization also revealed that about 20,000 seafarers, dock workers, and crew members in the surrounding area have been affected.
