Iran on Edge as Missile Hits Near Nuclear Plant, Killing One Over 200 Evacuated

A missile struck a building near Iran's nuclear power plant, causing one fatality. Meanwhile, Russia's energy company announced it has evacuated over 200 employees from the facility.

Tasnim News Agency, an Iranian government outlet, reported that on the morning of Saturday, 4 Apr 2026, a missile landed on the outskirts of the Bushehr nuclear power plant in Iran, damaging one building and resulting in the death of a security officer.

The United Nations nuclear watchdog agency (IAEA) stated there have been no reports of increased radiation levels but issued a warning about attacks on nuclear power plants. It called for "utmost restraint in the use of military force to avoid the risk of nuclear accidents."

Rosatom, Russia's state nuclear energy company, announced today that it is evacuating 198 employees from the Bushehr nuclear power plant but did not indicate any radiation leak.

This marks the fourth time the area has been targeted since the conflict began on 28 Feb. The Bushehr nuclear power plant is Iran's only operational nuclear power facility.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi issued a strong statement in response to the incident, warning that any release of radioactive material could "destroy lives not only in Tehran but also in the Persian Gulf capitals."

Araghchi also urged Western countries to recall the "anger" they expressed over Russia's similar attacks on Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.
