India Purchases Oil from Iran for the First Time in Over 7 Years

India has purchased oil from Iran for the first time in over seven years after being heavily affected by the war in the Middle East.

On 4 Apr 2026 GMT+7, India's Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas confirmed that India has ordered oil from Iran for the first time in many years, while the ongoing war in the Middle East continues to severely impact the global energy market.

According to Reuters news agency, the ministry's statement is a rare official admission that India is now importing oil from Iran after avoiding it for seven years due to U.S. sanctions.

The Ministry of Petroleum also added that India has purchased 44,000 metric tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from Iran, which is currently being unloaded at Mangalore port.

India relies on fuel imports primarily from the Middle East, including about 85% of its total LPG consumption, making it severely affected by Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation against U.S. and Israeli attacks.

This official acknowledgment of fuel purchases from Iran comes after the Trump administration last month approved a temporary license allowing Iran to sell 140 million barrels of crude oil stranded at sea, aiming to ease pressure on the global energy market.
