Trump Threatens to Jail Reporter Over Leak on Iranian Pilot Rescue

U.S. President Donald Trump threatened legal action against a journalist reporting on the rescue of pilots in Iran, demanding the disclosure of the source, citing national security concerns amid escalating tensions with the media.

President Donald Trump of the United States stated he would take decisive action against the reporter who first covered the rescue of pilots in Iran, issuing an ultimatum to reveal the source of the information or face possible imprisonment.

This incident stemmed from a U.S. fighter jet being shot down over Iranian airspace last Friday (3 Apr), with two pilots onboard. Subsequently, several media outlets reported that the first pilot was safely rescued by U.S. forces. Trump viewed this disclosure as undermining the security of the ongoing rescue operation for the second pilot, who was still missing at the time, although the second pilot was later safely rescued.

The statement was made during a White House press briefing, reflecting increasing tensions between the government and the media. Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the media’s coverage of the U.S.-Israel and Iran conflict, which he considered negative.

Trump said, "We did not discuss the rescue of the first pilot for hours, but then someone leaked the information, and we are seriously hunting down the source of this leak." He added, "We will go to the media companies that reported this and tell them, 'This is a matter of national security. Provide the information or go to jail.'"

However, Trump did not specify which media outlet or journalist he was targeting, as multiple major news organizations, including The New York Times, CBS News, and Axios, reported on the rescue around the same time.

This threat is seen as a significant escalation in attacks on press freedom. Just one month earlier, Brendan Carr, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), warned television stations airing "fake news" that it could affect their license renewal.

The White House has not provided further details about which journalist is the target of this threat, amid criticism that the government is abusing its power to intimidate the media and suppress press freedom.
