Pakistan's Prime Minister has called on Donald Trump to extend the deadline for negotiations with Iran by two weeks to allow the diplomatic process to proceed fully.
On 7 Apr 2026 GMT+7, Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged U.S. President Donald Trump to extend the deadline set with Iran, which is due to expire in a few hours, by another two weeks “to allow the diplomatic process to proceed completely,” and also called on Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz.
In a post on platform X, Sharif stated, “Diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the ongoing Middle East war are making solid, strong, and powerful progress, with the potential to lead to tangible results in the near future.”
“To allow the diplomatic process to reach its full course, I sincerely appeal to President Trump to extend the deadline by two weeks,” Sharif said, adding, “On behalf of Pakistan, we sincerely call on our Iranian brothers to open the Strait of Hormuz for two weeks as a gesture of goodwill.”
“We also call on all conflicting parties to observe a ceasefire in all areas for two weeks to enable diplomacy to achieve the goal of permanently ending the war, for the benefit of long-term peace and stability in the region.”
Meanwhile, White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt stated that President Donald Trump has acknowledged the proposal from Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and added, “There will be a response,” without specifying whether Trump has made a decision or what that decision might be.
