Pope Leo XIV once again criticized the war in the East, saying that threats against the Iranian people are "truly unacceptable," while calling on people to seek peace.
On 7 Apr 2026 GMT+7, Pope Leo XIV said that threats against the Iranian people are "truly unacceptable," just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump posted on social media, "An entire civilization will be wiped out tonight," as a deadline he set approached.
“Certainly there are issues of international law here, but there is more. It is a matter of morality, for the welfare of the people as a whole,” Pope Leo said outside Castel Gandolfo, the papal summer residence.
Pope Leo reiterated his Easter Sunday message, urging people to “always seek peace and reject violence, reject war, especially wars that many say are unjust, which are intensifying and solving nothing.”
He asked people to remember “the victims of this prolonged war,” including children, the elderly, and the sick.
Pope Leo XIV has been an outspoken critic of the Iran war since it began on 28 Feb, also stating that attacks on civilian infrastructure violate international law.
“It is also a sign of hatred, division, and destruction that humans can inflict, and we all must work for peace,” he said, urging citizens worldwide to contact their political leaders and representatives to demand an end to the deepening conflict.
Previously, the Pope told CNN he hopes Trump is seeking a way to end the war with Iran and called for world leaders to return to the negotiating table.
