Donald Trump stated he agreed to postpone the deadline for striking Iran by two weeks at Pakistan's request, on the condition that Iran also opens the Strait of Hormuz as Pakistan has demanded.
On 7 Apr 2026 GMT+7, U.S. President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that he agreed to delay the deadline to attack Iran's energy infrastructure by two more weeks after the Pakistani Prime Minister requested more time, to allow diplomatic processes to proceed fully.
Trump’s message said, “Following discussions with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and General Azim Munir of Pakistan, who requested I suspend the deployment of destructive forces to Iran tonight, and on the condition that the Islamic Republic of Iran agrees to fully, immediately, and safely open the Strait of Hormuz as Pakistan demands, I have agreed to suspend bombing and attacking Iran for two weeks. This will be a 'ceasefire' for both sides!”
"The reason for this action is that we have achieved and exceeded all military objectives, and have made great progress toward a definitive agreement on long-term peace with Iran and peace in the Middle East. We have received ten proposals from Iran, which we believe provide a foundation for further negotiations. Nearly all past conflicts have been agreed upon between the U.S. and Iran, but the two-week period will allow this agreement to be finalized and completed."
"On behalf of the United States, as President and representative of countries in the Middle East, it is a great honor that this long-standing issue is close to resolution. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President Donald J. Trump."
Previously, Trump had set a deadline for negotiations with Iran at 8:00 p.m. local time on Tuesday, 7 Apr 2026 GMT+7, or about 7:00 a.m. Wednesday Thai time, warning that if the deadline passed, the U.S. would launch a devastating attack to destroy Iran’s “civilization.”
However, just hours before the deadline, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif posted on X urging Trump to extend the deadline by two weeks and called on Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz for the same two-week period.
“Diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the ongoing Middle East war are making steady, strong, and powerful progress, with the potential to lead to concrete results in the near future,” Sharif’s message stated.
“To allow the diplomatic process to go to completion, I sincerely urge President Trump to extend the deadline by two weeks,” Sharif said, adding, “On behalf of Pakistan, we sincerely call on our Iranian brothers to also open the Strait of Hormuz for two weeks as a gesture of goodwill.”
“We further call on all parties in conflict to observe a ceasefire across all areas for two weeks to enable diplomacy to achieve a permanent end to the war, for the benefit of long-term peace and stability in the region.”
