U.S. Vice President to Lead Talks with Iran in Pakistan This Weekend

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance will lead the U.S. delegation in talks with Iranian representatives in Pakistan this weekend, with the White House emphasizing that Vance has been involved in all previous negotiations.

On 8 Apr 2026 GMT+7, White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt told reporters in the White House briefing room that President Donald Trump is sending a delegation led by Vice President J.D. Vance to Islamabad, Pakistan, this weekend to negotiate with Iranian representatives.

Special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law, will also participate in this negotiation process.

“I announce that the president is sending a delegation led by Vice President J.D. Vance, special envoy Witkoff, and Mr. Kushner to Islamabad to conduct talks this weekend,” Leavitt said, adding that the first round of talks will start Saturday morning local time.

“Mr. Vance has played a crucial and key role in this matter from the beginning,” Leavitt added later. “Certainly, he is the president’s right hand, and as U.S. vice president, he has been involved in all previous discussions.”

Leavitt also mentioned China’s role in helping achieve a ceasefire agreement, saying, “Regarding China, there have been discussions between our highest-level officials and the Chinese government.”

When asked about security risks for the vice president’s trip to Pakistan, Leavitt said the White House places full trust in the Secret Service "to provide security for the vice president and the president’s negotiation team."
