Scaffolding Collapse at Steel Factory Near Tokyo Injures Three

A scaffolding over 40 meters tall collapsed inside a steel factory in Kawasaki, near Tokyo, Japan. This caused several workers to fall from a height, with at least three sustaining serious injuries and one person reported missing.

On 9 Apr 2026, Japan's NHK news reported that a scaffolding structure about 40 meters high collapsed at a construction site of JFE Steel in the Keihin district of Kawasaki, near Tokyo. At least three people were seriously injured and one person remains missing.

According to reports, police initially believe the cause was a cylindrical counterweight of about 500 tons attached to a crane that detached and struck the scaffolding, causing it to collapse. Officials are investigating the details of the incident as well as the safety measures in place to determine if there were any shortcomings.
