NATO Secretary General Confirms Allies Provide Extensive Support to Trump in War with Iran

The NATO Secretary General confirmed that the alliance is providing the United States with substantial assistance in the war against Iran and is complying with nearly all requests made by President Donald Trump.

On 9 Apr 2026 GMT+7, Mr. Mark Rutte, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), stated that the alliance has not been “complacent about the dangers faced” and that members are doing everything requested by President Donald Trump in the war with Iran, although he admitted that some allies were "somewhat slow" initially in supporting the U.S.

“To be fair to them, they were somewhat surprised as well. To maintain secrecy about the initial strike and prevent them from preparing, President Trump chose not to inform allies in advance,” Rutte said during a briefing in Washington.

“But what I see across Europe today is that the allies are providing massive support,” he continued. “All allied countries are doing everything the U.S. has requested. They have been informed and are responding to President Trump’s requests with almost no exceptions.”

Additionally, Rutte said NATO is willing to play a role in any potential mission in the Strait of Hormuz if capable, praising the United Kingdom for “leading the international allied group” to guarantee free navigation through this vital shipping route.

“If NATO can help, then certainly there is no reason not to provide assistance,” he said.

Rutte made these remarks a day after meeting Trump at the White House. He told Jake Tapper from CNN after their meeting that he understood the president’s frustrations and that they had an open and honest conversation as “good friends,” despite Trump continuing to sharply criticize NATO via Truth Social afterwards.
