Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a ceasefire with Ukraine during the Orthodox Easter festival, with Ukraine also proposing a ceasefire during this time.
On 9 Apr 2026 GMT+7, the Kremlin government revealed that President Vladimir Putin declared a ceasefire with Ukraine throughout the Orthodox Christian Easter festival, following Ukraine's proposal for a ceasefire during the same period.
“President Putin announced a ceasefire starting from 16:00 on 11 April 2026 (which corresponds to 20:00 the same day in Thailand) until 12 April ... in observance of the upcoming Orthodox Easter festival,” the Kremlin stated in a press release.
The Kremlin further stated that the military chiefs “have been ordered to halt combat operations in all directions during this period,” adding that the forces are prepared to “respond to any provocations that may arise from the enemy side” and “expect Ukraine to follow the example set by the Russian Federation.”
Earlier that same week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had sent a holiday ceasefire proposal to Russia via the United States, while peace talks to end the four-year conflict have stalled due to the war in the Middle East.
Previous rounds of negotiations led by the United States have failed to bring the two countries to an agreement, and talks have stalled as Washington’s focus shifted to Iran.
Additionally, negotiations appear at an impasse because Moscow demands Kyiv relinquish territory and make political concessions, which Zelensky has outright rejected, seeing these demands as tantamount to surrender.
The war between Russia and Ukraine, ongoing for more than four years, has resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths and displaced millions, becoming the bloodiest conflict in Europe since World War II.
