U.S. to Facilitate Talks Between Israeli and Lebanese Ambassadors

The United States is preparing to hold talks between Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors in Washington, D.C., to reduce violence along the border after the U.S. leader revealed he ordered officials to start negotiations with the Lebanese side as soon as possible.

On 9 Sep 2026 GMT+7, CBS News reported citing State Department officials that representatives from Lebanon and Israel will meet in the U.S. next week to conduct negotiations at the State Department building in Washington, D.C., with the U.S. acting as mediator. The goal is to reduce violence along the border between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group.

Two sources close to the plan, including a Lebanese official, said the meeting aims to explore ways to begin direct talks focused on reducing tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border.

Sources stated that Michael Issa, the U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon, will lead the negotiations alongside Nada Hamadeh Moawad, Lebanese Ambassador, and Yekhel Leiter, Israeli Ambassador.

However, CNN reported citing two Lebanese officials that the Lebanese government has not been informed about the possibility of a meeting in Washington, D.C. next week, despite Israeli and U.S. officials indicating they expect talks to begin at the U.S. State Department.

Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had ordered the government to “open direct negotiations with Lebanon as soon as possible” following “multiple requests” from the Lebanese side.

Nevertheless, Lebanese officials confirmed that “there will be no talks under fire,” stating that both the Lebanese Foreign Ministry and the Presidential Palace have not received any official notification about an invitation to start negotiations and have heard nothing about a potential meeting next week.

Later, Netanyahu confirmed there will be no ceasefire in Lebanon despite his efforts to push for negotiations to take place.
