U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Iranian leaders today after reports surfaced that Iran is considering imposing fees on oil tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Donald Trump posted on the Truth Social platform stating, "There are reports that Iran is charging fees on oil tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz — absolutely do not allow this, and if they are doing it, they must stop immediately!"
Although a ceasefire agreement was announced Tuesday night, which Trump said would include the complete and immediate opening of the strait, so far oil tanker traffic through this strategic route remains minimal due to a lack of clarity from Iran.
Later, Trump posted again expressing his dissatisfaction with the situation, stating,
"Iran is doing a very poor job, possibly disgraceful, regarding allowing oil to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. This is not the agreement we have!"
Earlier, CNN reported that officials in Tehran proposed Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz as one of the demands to end the war, raising concerns about prolonged economic impacts and a global energy crisis.
Meanwhile, Iran’s parliamentary Security Commission has approved a plan to charge tolls on ships passing through the strait, reaffirming Iran’s sovereign authority, according to a commission member who spoke to state television on Monday.
