South Korea Sends Special Envoy to Iran After 26 Ships Remain Stuck at Hormuz

The South Korean government is preparing to send a special envoy to Iran to negotiate maritime security through the Strait of Hormuz after the ceasefire agreement between the U.S. and Iran has yet to assure safe passage.

The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it has appointed Chung Byung-ha, former ambassador to Kuwait and Arctic cooperation representative, as a special envoy to travel to Tehran within the next few days.

This decision follows a phone conversation between South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

During the visit, South Korea hopes to discuss various issues with Iran, including the Middle East situation, the safety of citizens, ships, and crews, as well as conditions for maritime passage.

Currently, a total of 26 South Korean-flagged vessels, including oil tankers, are unable to transit the Strait of Hormuz.

Shipping company executives and analysts note that despite the ceasefire, ongoing uncertainties make navigation in the area highly risky.

South Korea is a key U.S. ally in the Indo-Pacific region and plays a significant security role, with approximately 28,000 U.S. troops stationed to counter threats from North Korea, making the outcome of these talks particularly important.
