The U.S. Vice President revealed that neither he nor Iranian representatives could reach an agreement to end the conflict between them, despite marathon talks lasting nearly a full day. He emphasized that the U.S. had already put forward its best offer.
On 12 Apr 2026 GMT+7, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance held a press conference in Islamabad, Pakistan, stating that the U.S. and Iranian delegations had yet to reach an agreement to end their conflict, even though both sides had engaged in marathon talks overnight.
"We have been at this for 21 hours, and we have had substantive discussions with Iran—that is the good news," Vance said. "The bad news is we have not reached an agreement, and I believe that is worse news for Iran than it is for the United States. Therefore, we are returning to the U.S. without a joint agreement."
"We have been quite accommodating. The President told us, 'You must come here sincerely and make every effort to reach an agreement.' We have done that, but unfortunately, we made no progress," Vance said, adding that the main unresolved issue was Iran's refusal to abandon its nuclear program.
When CNN reporter Nick Robertson asked which conditions Iran had rejected, Vance responded, "The simple fact is we need to see a clear commitment that they will not pursue nuclear weapons and will not seek the means to rapidly develop such weapons."
The Vice President continued, "The question is, 'Have we seen a fundamental commitment from Iran not to develop nuclear weapons—not just now or in two years, but in the long term?' We have not seen that yet, but we hope to in the future."
"We are leaving here with a very straightforward proposal, which is our final and best offer as a framework for understanding," he said. "We will have to wait and see whether Iran accepts it."
