Trump Criticizes Iran for Refusing to Abandon Nuclear Ambitions, Urges Opening of Hormuz Strait as Promised

Donald Trump posted messages attacking Iran for refusing to abandon its nuclear ambitions, a matter of utmost importance to the U.S., while urging Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz as it had promised.

On 12 Apr 2026 GMT+7, U.S. President Donald Trump posted a lengthy statement on Truth Social condemning Iran for not abandoning its nuclear efforts, which caused talks between the two sides in Pakistan to end without an agreement to end the war. He also called on Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz as promised.

"Iran promised to open the Strait of Hormuz but deliberately failed to fulfill this promise. This has caused anxiety, turmoil, and suffering for many people and countries worldwide. They claim to have laid naval mines, yet most of their entire navy and mine-laying vessels have been destroyed. They might have done it, but which shipowner would dare to take the risk?"

"This is a great disgrace and a permanent damage to Iran's reputation, including what remains of their 'leaders.' But we have moved beyond that. As they promised, they should begin the process to open this international waterway as soon as possible! They are violating every applicable law."

"I received a comprehensive briefing from Vice President J.D. Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner about the meeting held in Islamabad, led with great compassion and capability by General Asim Munir and Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. They are truly remarkable men and have repeatedly thanked me for helping save the lives of 30 to 50 million people from what could have been a terrible war with India. I always appreciate hearing that—the scale of the humanity involved is priceless."

"The talks with Iran began early in the morning and lasted all night—almost 20 hours. I could provide many details and discuss several points of agreement, but only one thing really matters— Iran is unwilling to abandon its nuclear ambitions!" In many respects, the agreed terms were better than continuing military operations until the end, but none of those points matter when compared to allowing nuclear power to remain in the hands of such volatile, difficult-to-handle, and unpredictable people."

"My three representatives, who have always been friendly and respectful toward the Iranian delegates Mohammed-Baqer Qalibaf, Abbas Araghchi, and Ali Bagheri—which is not surprising—nevertheless, that does not matter because they remain stubborn on the single most important issue. As I have always said, from the start and years ago— Iran will never possess nuclear weapons!" :"
