Iran's Foreign Minister revealed for the first time after returning from Pakistan that negotiations with the United States nearly reached a memorandum of understanding (MOU), but the US caused the talks to collapse.
On 12 Apr 2026 GMT+7, Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Foreign Minister, posted on platform X to clarify the outcome of talks with US representatives in Pakistan over the past weekend, which ended without an agreement.
In his first official statement since returning from Islamabad, Araghchi described the talks as the most intense confrontation between the two countries in 47 years. He said Iran entered the talks "with sincerity" aiming to end the ongoing conflict.
The post stated that discussions advanced to the point of nearly reaching a joint memorandum of understanding (MOU).
"But while only inches away from the 'Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding,' we faced demands for maximum unilateral benefits, shifting rules, and blockade measures," Araghchi said, referring to recent threats by US President Donald Trump to blockade the Strait of Hormuz.
"No lessons have been learned. Friendship is reciprocated with friendship, and hostility with hostility," Araghchi added in conclusion.
