Trump Removes Image of Himself as Jesus After Backlash from Supporters

Donald Trump's Truth Social account has deleted an image depicting him dressed as Jesus Christ after facing criticism from all sides, including his own supporter base.

On 13 Apr 2026 GMT+7, Donald Trump's Truth Social account removed an image resembling him as Jesus Christ after the post sparked strong disapproval from across the political spectrum, including conservatives who support Trump, viewing it as an act of religious disrespect.

Late Sunday night, Trump posted an AI-generated image showing himself in Jesus' attire healing a sick man, surrounded by doctors and military personnel admiring the scene, with a backdrop featuring the U.S. flag, a bald eagle, the Statue of Liberty, and fighter jets.

This post came after the president harshly criticized Pope Leo XIV on Truth Social, labeling him "weak" for opposing a war with Iran.

Several of Trump's major supporters voiced opposition to the use of imagery mimicking Jesus Christ and called on the president to remove the image.

"Honestly, I don’t understand why he posted that picture. Is he seeking attention? Or does he truly believe that?" conservative influencer Riley Gaines wrote on X Monday morning. "Either way, two things are certain: 1) A little humility would benefit him, 2) God is not someone to be mocked."

Joey Jones, co-host of Fox News' The Big Weekend Show and a long-time Trump supporter, wrote on X: "That picture was over the top. I'm not the type to be easily offended or pretend to be angry, and I think all politicians are naturally a bit self-absorbed. But seriously, man, it’s better not to create unnecessary trouble for yourself!"

"This is a serious act of religious disrespect. Faith is not a prop," conservative political activist Brylin Hollyhand wrote about Trump's post. "You don’t need to portray yourself as a savior when your past deeds should speak for themselves. The same God who saved Trump from that bullet is the one who sent Jesus, His Son, to die for our sins. He died for Trump as much as for you and me."

Meanwhile, Michael Knowles, host on the right-wing Daily Wire, posted on X: "I assume someone has already told him, but regardless of intent, removing the image was the right thing for the president to do, both spiritually and politically."
