Donald Trump came forward to explain the image of himself dressed as Jesus that was shared on Truth Social and later removed, claiming he thought it was a picture of himself in a doctor's outfit.
On 13 Apr 2026, Donald Trump, President of the United States, answered questions from reporters at the White House. At one point, he addressed an image resembling him dressed as Jesus that had been posted on his Truth Social account, drawing criticism from all sides, including his own supporters, before the image was eventually removed.
Trump claimed that he thought the image showed him as a doctor. "I did post it, and I thought that was me in a doctor's outfit, and it was related to the Red Cross."
He further said only fake news media assumed the image portrayed him as Jesus. "I just heard about this and said, 'How could they think that?' It was supposed to be a picture of me as a doctor helping people get better, which I really do."
Trump posted the image after he had harshly criticized Pope Leo XIV on Sunday, calling him "weak" for opposing a war with Iran.
However, on Monday, Pope Leo responded that he "is not afraid of the Trump administration" and will continue to speak frankly.
