The South Korean military revealed that North Korea tested multiple missiles on Sunday morning amid rising tensions. Analysts say this signals a rejection of South Korea's goodwill, while satellite images show evidence of accelerated construction of new destroyers with Russian assistance.
The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff reported that at approximately 06:10 local time on 19 Apr, North Korea conducted multiple launches of unknown type ballistic missiles from the Sinpo area into the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan. This marks the latest in a series of increasingly frequent weapons tests over recent weeks.
The South Korean presidential office announced it would convene an immediate emergency security meeting and escalate surveillance to the highest level to prepare for the possibility of further missile launches.
Analysts view this weapons test as a rejection of the South Korean government's efforts to restore strained relations. Previously, South Korea had expressed regret over a civilian drone incursion into North Korean airspace in January, which Kim Yo-jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, initially praised as "smart and commendable behavior."
However, earlier this month, North Korean senior officials shifted tone, labeling South Korea as "the most hostile enemy state," reinforcing rhetoric previously declared by Kim Jong-un.
Beyond missile intimidation, reports indicate North Korea is rapidly upgrading its navy. In early April, Kim Jong-un inspected a strategic cruise missile test from the destroyer "Choe Hyon," one of two 5,000-ton destroyers launched last year.
Moreover, South Korean lawmaker Yoo Yong-won cited satellite images revealing North Korea's accelerated construction of two additional 5,000-ton destroyers at the western Nampo port. He suggested this rapid development results from military support from Russia, reciprocating North Korea's deployment of troops and artillery to aid Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Experts believe Russia has transferred advanced military technology to North Korea, including missile and nuclear weapon technology, in clear violation of United Nations sanctions.
