The Indian government summoned Iran's ambassador to express concern after two Indian ships were fired upon in the Strait of Hormuz earlier this morning.
On 18 Apr 2026 GMT+7, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs announced that Vikram Misri, India's Foreign Secretary, summoned Iran's ambassador to New Delhi to "express serious concern" after two Indian-flagged ships were involved in a violent incident in the Strait of Hormuz earlier that morning.
Earlier, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the Royal Navy's maritime coordination center, gunboats of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) opened fire on an oil tanker passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
The ship's captain told UKMTO that two IRGC gunboats approached closely and opened fire without any radio warning, but UKMTO confirmed that the ship and crew were safe.
A few hours later, UKMTO reported that another container cargo ship was attacked with an "unknown explosive device" in the same area, but the attacker remains unidentified.
Mr. Misri emphasized that India prioritizes the safety of its commercial vessels and crews, citing previous ships that had safely passed through the Strait of Hormuz to reach India.
He also urged Iran to "resume facilitating the safe passage of vessels destined for India through the Strait as soon as possible."
