A gunman opened fire in Kyiv, Ukraine, resulting in six deaths and dozens of injuries. Initially, the assailant took several hostages before being fatally shot by police.
On 18 Apr 2026 GMT+7, Vitali Klitschko, mayor of Kyiv, reported that a shooting occurred in the Holosiivskyi district in the southern part of Ukraine's capital, leaving at least six dead and many injured.
Ihor Klymenko, Ukraine's Minister of Internal Affairs, said the attacker began shooting at people on the street before taking hostages in a nearby supermarket. The assailant engaged in a gunfight with police and was fatally shot inside the supermarket. The attacker’s motive remains unknown.
Mayor Klitschko provided preliminary details that at least 15 people were injured, with 10—including one child—hospitalized. Most victims were shot dead on the street, and a woman around 30 years old died later in the hospital.
Ukraine's Prosecutor General Ruslan Krafchenko stated the perpetrator was a 58-year-old man from Moscow, Russia, who used an automatic firearm in this mass shooting.
President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that four hostages were later rescued and freed.
Additionally, Prosecutor Krafchenko reported a fire broke out in the suspect’s apartment. Unconfirmed reports suggest the attacker planted an explosive device. Mayor Klitschko confirmed the assailant caused the fire, and authorities are thoroughly investigating the entire incident.
