Hit-and-Run Driver Strikes Pedestrians on Melbourne Sidewalk, Killing One and Seriously Injuring Another

A vehicle drove onto a sidewalk and struck pedestrians, causing one fatality and one serious injury. The driver has been arrested by police.

On 18 Apr 2025 GMT+7, Victoria Police reported that a grey Toyota hit two pedestrians on Langs Street in the Ascot Vale area at nearly 5:00 p.m. local time on Saturday. One victim died at the scene, while the second was rushed to hospital with critical, potentially life-threatening injuries.

Police stated they do not yet know the exact circumstances of the collision. The detained man is awaiting questioning.

Local media reported the incident occurred outside the Melbourne Showgrounds exhibition center, which was hosting the two-day Supanova Comic Con & Gaming event, a pop culture and gaming convention.

Detective Inspector Craig McEvoy told 9News the driver was arrested by an undercover police officer, with assistance from bystanders in the area.

Police have not confirmed whether the act was intentional and are investigating all possibilities, including the use of drugs or alcohol.

However, Australian local media quoted a witness named "Tom" who said he heard loud screeching brakes before seeing a man drive onto the sidewalk at frightening speed and hit two people.

Tom further recounted that the vehicle attempted to reverse back toward him but stalled before the engine died. He claimed to have helped prevent the driver from fleeing the scene.
