Fireworks Factory Explosion in India Kills 25

A powerful explosion occurred at a fireworks factory in Tamil Nadu, southern India, killing at least 25 workers and injuring many others. Suspiciously, the factory was operating illegally on a holiday, while the owner and supervisor fled. Police have formed teams to track them and press charges.

A severe explosion took place inside the Vanaja Fireworks Industry factory in Virudhunagar district, Tamil Nadu, on Sunday evening (19 Apr). At least 25 people died, with four others seriously injured.

N.O. Sukabutr, district governor, told ANI news agency that during rescue efforts, a second explosion occurred, injuring 13 more people, though none seriously. The ongoing explosions inside the rubble made rescue work highly challenging and required extreme caution from officials.

Preliminary investigation found the factory had a valid license but violated regulations by illegally operating on Sunday, a holiday. Survivors reported about 50 workers were inside during the explosion, many working on the factory's front balcony. The blast destroyed the building, leaving only brick debris, and many victims' bodies were badly burned and unrecognizable. Authorities have identified 22 victims so far, mostly women.

The factory owner and supervisor fled after the explosion. Police have set up four special teams to track and prosecute them for negligence and safety violations. India's fireworks industry frequently faces criticism over poor safety standards despite being a major supplier for festivals and weddings nationwide.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted condolences calling the tragedy "deeply saddening," sending sympathies to the victims' families. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin ordered officials to provide full assistance to survivors and their families.

Rescue operations have now ended, but authorities continue to seal off the site to investigate the exact cause of the explosion.
