Iran Declares No Plans for New Round of Talks with the U.S.

The status of a new round of negotiations between the U.S. and Iran is increasingly questioned, with Tehran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson recently confirming that there are currently no plans for a second round of talks.

Esmaeil Baqaei, spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry, said during the weekly press briefing on Monday morning, 20 Apr 2026 GMT+7, “At present, we have no plans for the next round of talks... We do not believe in deadlines or ultimatums to protect Iran’s interests.”

Baqaei’s remarks came after Donald Trump posted on Sunday (19 Apr) that U.S. representatives would travel to Islamabad, Pakistan, to participate in the second round of talks with Iran within this week, while Iranian news told CNN that Iran’s delegation would travel to Islamabad on Tuesday.

However, Iranian government media reported that there is no confirmation whether Iranian officials will appear in Islamabad, with some outlets stating that as long as the U.S. continues to blockade Iranian ports, the second round of talks will not take place.

Moreover, the likelihood of talks appears to diminish further after the U.S. military fired weapons and seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman, prompting Tehran to express strong dissatisfaction and affirm that it will respond.

Meanwhile, according to reports summarizing the conversation between Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday, there was no mention of further negotiations between Iran and the U.S.
