Canadian Woman Dies in Shooting at Ancient Teotihuacan Pyramids in Mexico

A shooting occurred at Mexico's ancient Teotihuacan pyramids, resulting in the death of a Canadian woman and several others injured. The perpetrator then took their own life after the incident.

On 20 Apr 2026 GMT+7, a man opened fire with a gun inside the Teotihuacan archaeological site, located about 100 km north of Mexico City. The attack caused the death of a Canadian woman and multiple injuries. The shooter committed suicide.

Following the incident, police seized firearms, sharp weapons, and ammunition at the scene. Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum stated she is closely monitoring the situation, ordering the security cabinet to urgently investigate and provide all necessary support. She is also coordinating with the Canadian embassy.

Security Secretary Cristóbal Castañeda Camarillo told reporters on Monday that among the injured were two Colombians, one Russian, and one Canadian. The motive behind the attack remains unknown.

Teotihuacan is an ancient city featuring massive pyramids that predate the Aztec civilization. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Mexico's most popular tourist destinations.
