Explosion and Fire in Pennsylvania Home Kills Mother and Six Children

A tragic incident occurred in an Amish community in Pennsylvania, USA, when a house exploded followed by a rapidly spreading fire, killing a mother and her six children. Neighbors described a powerful blast that shook the area before the fire engulfed the entire house within minutes. Police believe the cause was a propane gas leak inside the home.

Pennsylvania state police reported the incident took place in Lamar, Clinton County, on Sunday morning (19 Apr) after receiving reports of a severe explosion and fire at a residence, resulting in seven fatalities.

The deceased were confirmed as 34-year-old Sarah Stoltzfus and her six children—four sons aged 11, 10, 5, and 3, and two daughters aged 8 and 6. All were members of the Amish community, a Christian group known for living simply and avoiding modern technology.

Kristina Duck, a neighbor who witnessed the event, said she was eating breakfast when she heard a loud explosion that shook the house. Looking out the window, she saw flames quickly engulf the home. She noted the family had only lived there for two months and that the children were often seen playing outside together.

Fire officials stated that upon arrival, the fire was too intense to enter and rescue anyone inside, and the house was damaged beyond repair.

Initial investigations suggest the cause was a propane gas leak inside the house, which led to the explosion and rapid fire spread. However, officials confirmed that the propane tank outside the house did not explode and was not the source of the tragedy. A thorough investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause.

This event has deeply saddened the Amish community, with members gathering at the scene to pay respects and assist with the aftermath. David Stoltzfus, the husband and father of the victims, was the sole survivor of the family.
