A Cambodian columnist criticized the global media giant The Wall Street Journal for using the term "Scambodia" to refer to Cambodia, saying it undermines the value of the sovereign nation by creating a criminal stereotype. He emphasized that this irresponsible reporting ignores the government's serious efforts to suppress call center gangs.
Roth Santepheap, a Cambodian columnist and geopolitical analyst, wrote in Khmer Times calling on The Wall Street Journal to uphold professional ethical standards and stop using the term "Scambodia" (a blend of "scam" and "Cambodia"). He stated that this behavior is not news analysis but rather mockery and disrespect that a leading media outlet should not engage in.
The article explained that "Cambodia" is the official name of a sovereign state recognized worldwide. Distorting the name into a mocking term like "Scambodia" stigmatizes the country with a negative stereotype. This is not only unprofessional but also reflects a lack of responsibility by a media outlet that claims global influence.
He pointed out that while online crime is a real and serious issue, these networks are transnational with individuals from multiple countries involved, not confined solely to Cambodia. Furthermore, the article noted that The Wall Street Journal ignored the Cambodian government's recent efforts, which included large-scale crackdowns over the past few months, dismantling hundreds of hideouts, arresting or deporting thousands of implicated foreigners, and enforcing stricter laws.
Mr. Santepheap said that using the term "Scambodia" not only misinforms but also harms Cambodia’s economy, damages its reputation, and stigmatizes millions of innocent Cambodians not involved in crime. He questioned the double standard of whether The Wall Street Journal would dare to use a similar mocking term for Western countries facing comparable crime problems.
Advocates stated that media critique and scrutiny are acceptable and necessary, but ridicule is inappropriate. They thus called on The Wall Street Journal to take the following actions:
Remove the term "Scambodia" from articles and refrain from using it in the future.
Correct records and information to reflect the facts accurately.
Maintain standards of fair reporting that provide balanced information instead of using rhetoric that generates sensationalism while damaging another country's dignity.
The article concluded that Cambodia deserves to be discussed accurately and fairly, not reduced to a joke in headlines. Readers should receive informative news rather than insults or disrespect.
