Trump Declares He Does Not Wish to Extend Ceasefire with Iran, Citing Limited Time

Donald Trump stated he does not want to extend the ceasefire agreement with Iran because there is not much time left and expects bombing attacks on Iran to continue once the ceasefire ends.

On 21 Apr 2026 GMT+7, Donald Trump, the U.S. president, told domestic media that he expects bombing operations in Iran to continue if the U.S. cannot reach an agreement to extend the ceasefire before the Wednesday evening deadline.

“I expect there will be bombing because I think that is a better attitude to start negotiations,” Trump said during a phone interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” program this morning.

“But we are ready. I mean, our military is very eager to act. They’re really incredible,” Trump added, referring to his efforts to rebuild the U.S. military.

The U.S. leader also expressed that he does not want to extend the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, stating, “I don’t want to do that... We don’t have that much time because by the time both sides get to that point (the ceasefire), as you know, they were just recently given the green light to proceed (with negotiations) — which I already knew they had to do — I don’t think they have any other choice. They need to negotiate.”

When asked about the impact of threats to bomb bridges and power plants in Iran, Trump emphasized that such actions would cause military damage to Iran.

“It’s not my choice, but it will hurt them. It will have military consequences for them. They use those bridges to transport weapons and move missiles,” Trump said, adding that both sides are using the ceasefire period to "rearm and resupply."

Trump said Iran has strong motivation to reach an agreement with the U.S., calling the Iranian people “incredible” but describing their leadership as “bloodthirsty” and “hardline.”

“Iran can stand firmly again if they agree to a deal. They can make themselves a strong and wonderful country once more,” Trump concluded.
