Donald Trump has extended the ceasefire period with Iran indefinitely, until a unified proposal is submitted, and the United States will continue its blockade of Iranian ports.
On 21 Apr 2026 GMT+7, Donald Trump, President of the United States, posted on Truth Social announcing an extension of the ceasefire with Iran until the Tehran leadership submits a unified proposal to the U.S. Trump claimed that the request came from Pakistan's leader.
Trump's message stated: “Given the fact that the Iranian government is experiencing severe internal division, which is not unexpected, and following requests from General Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan, we have been asked to delay attacks on Iran until their leaders and representatives can present a unified proposal.”
“Therefore, I have ordered our military to continue the blockade, maintain readiness and capabilities in all other respects, and extend the ceasefire until Iran submits a proposal and discussions reach a conclusion one way or another,” he signed off as “President Donald J. Trump.”
Analysts view President Donald Trump's announcement of the ceasefire extension as a sign that he still prioritizes a diplomatic resolution, as his administration remains hesitant to resume military attacks if there is still a chance to reach an agreement.
The statement that they are waiting for a “unified proposal” reflects the U.S. government's main concern about significant conflicts between Iran's negotiation team and the military leaders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), raising the question of who holds ultimate authority to sign any agreement.
However, another issue has arisen: sources familiar with the talks indicate that an indefinite extension with no set deadline could reduce pressure on Iran and potentially allow Tehran's government to delay negotiations, a concern that advisors have already privately warned Trump about during discussions.
