Pakistan's leader expressed thanks to Donald Trump for agreeing to extend the ceasefire with Iran at Pakistan's request, but Tehran stated that the losing side has no right to set conditions and that the time has come for Iran to strike first.
On 21 Apr 2026 GMT+7, Shehbaz Sharif, Prime Minister of Pakistan, thanked US President Donald Trump for accepting his request to extend the ceasefire with Iran until Tehran's leaders can present a unified proposal to the US side.
“On my own behalf and on behalf of General Syed Asim Munir, I sincerely thank President Trump for kindly accepting our request to extend the ceasefire to allow ongoing diplomatic efforts to continue,” Sharif posted on X, adding that Pakistan will continue striving toward a permanent end to the war.
He also urged both sides to adhere to the ceasefire agreement and to work toward a peace agreement in the second round of talks to be held in Islamabad.
Donald Trump recently announced the extension of the ceasefire until Tehran's leaders can submit a unified proposal to the US side, also stating that the US will continue to blockade Iranian ports.
Meanwhile, Mahdi Mohammadi, senior advisor to Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, rejected President Trump's announcement of the ceasefire extension, stating that Tehran's government should respond with military force.
Mohammadi said, “The losing side has no right to set conditions,” and described the ongoing US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz as a “siege,” which is “no different from heavy bombardment.”
He accused Trump of using the ceasefire extension as “a ruse to buy time for an unexpected attack,” adding, “It is time for Iran to be the first to take action.”
