Florida executed a 58-year-old male prisoner by lethal injection after he was convicted of killing a neighbor during a burglary in 1990 and spent 35 years on death row.
On 22 April 2026, international news agencies reported that Florida State Prison in the U.S. executed Chadwick Villasey, a 58-year-old inmate who had been on death row for 35 years for murdering a neighbor during a burglary in 1990.
Prison officials stated that the inmate was executed by lethal injection on Tuesday evening at the state prison in Raiford and was pronounced dead at 6:15 p.m. local time.
Previously, Villasey was sentenced to death in 1991 for the murder of 56-year-old neighbor Marley Sether during a burglary the year before.
Statistics show this was the eighth execution in the U.S. this year, with Florida accounting for five, Texas two, and Oklahoma one. Last year, the U.S. executed 47 inmates, the highest since 2009 when there were 52 executions. In 2025, Florida led with 19 executions, followed by Alabama, South Carolina, and Texas, each with five.
However, the death penalty has been abolished in 23 of the 50 U.S. states, while California, Oregon, and Pennsylvania have temporary moratoriums on executions. Former President Donald Trump has been a consistent supporter of the death penalty and has called for its expanded use against the most serious crimes.
