Tensions in the Middle East have escalated after reports emerged that a container ship was attacked near the Strait of Hormuz early Wednesday, even though the United States has extended an indefinite ceasefire.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that the ship was approached by a gunboat of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) without prior radio warning, before opening fire on the vessel.
The report stated the attack caused severe damage to the ship's navigation bridge. However, all crew members are safe, and there was no fire or environmental impact.
No further details have been released regarding the ship, such as its nationality or current location.
This latest incident occurred just days after India revealed that two vessels flying the Indian flag were fired upon while passing through the same area.
Previously, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had declared it would close the Strait of Hormuz if the United States did not lift its blockade measures, heightening concerns over global energy transport stability since this strait is a key route for international oil and goods shipments.
