Iran Claims Seizure of Two Ships in Strait of Hormuz, Attacks Another Rendering It Inoperable

The Iranian military stated that they seized two ships in the Strait of Hormuz, while local media claimed that the IRGC attacked another ship off the Iranian coast, leaving it inoperable.

On 22 April 2026, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a statement saying their forces had seized two ships in the Strait of Hormuz and had brought these vessels under control into Iranian waters. This occurred less than a day after the U.S. announced an extension of the ceasefire with Iran.

Iranian government broadcaster IRIB reported the IRGC statement saying, “Both ships were operating without proper authorization, repeatedly violating regulations and distorting navigation systems, which posed a dangerous signal to maritime security while attempting to smuggle out of the Strait of Hormuz.”

The statement also said that intercepting and stopping the ships was carried out to “protect the rights of the Iranian nation.”

Meanwhile, Iranian media further reported that a third ship, owned by a Greek company, was also targeted by an IRGC attack and is currently “inoperable” off the Iranian coast.

However, no independent agencies have yet confirmed the ship seizures. Earlier, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) had reported two container ships were shot at in the same area.
